How to Transmit Images Using Your Phone, Walkie-Talkie, and SDR: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hello, this is TheTechBoy with a special article.

Imagine you’re in a field with a cellphone and need to send pictures back to base, but their computers are disconnected from the network. All you have is a computer connected to an SDR, a phone, and a walkie-talkie. How can you transmit images? Or consider needing to share an image between two cellphones without signal or risking interception. Here’s what you need to do:

1.  Download the Necessary Apps:
   - Install the SSTV encoder and Robot36 apps on your phone. The SSTV encoder converts your image into sound, which Robot36 then decodes back into an image. This process acts like a modem for transmitting images.
   - For PC transmission, use the RXSSTV software to decode the SSTV signals.

2. Transmitting the Image:

   - Open the SSTV encoder app and set it up to transmit in a mode compatible with Robot36. Click the three dots, select "Modes," and choose the appropriate mode.
   - Tap the image icon to import the photo you want to transmit. Start the transmission; your phone will emit a series of beeps as it sends the image.
   - Position your phone's speakers close to the walkie-talkie’s microphone. On the receiving end, have the other party use Robot36 to decode the sound. They should see the image appear on their screen. If you’re using a PC, use the RX SSTV application, ensuring it’s set to listen in Robot36 mode.

Bonus Tip:

   - If you connect an SDR to a PC and tune it to the correct radio frequency, it should be able to receive the SSTV signal through RXSSTV, though this method is less certain.
   - To save the sound file for later transmission, click the three dots in the SSTV encoder app and select "Save as a Wave File."

With these steps, you can successfully transmit and receive images even under challenging conditions!
